What this site keeps, and who runs it.
Who runs it
Enjoy The Road is made by AZ.dev, which is run by AZ LLC, a Nevada limited liability company. Write to [email protected] with any question about your data.
What we keep
Our server keeps the request logs any web server keeps: the page asked for, the time and your IP address. We use them to keep the site running and to stop abuse.
When you write to an address at enjoytheroad.com, we keep your message, and the names and sizes of any attachments, so we can read it and answer you. If you have an account here and write from its address, deleting the account deletes those messages.
Your account
You can read everything here without an account. If you sign in, we keep your email address and when your account was made. If the link that brought you to the site named where it was posted, such as one of our posts on X, we keep that name with your account too.
When you ask for a sign-in link, we keep your email address and a scrambled copy of the link’s code until you use the link. A link you don’t use stops working after 15 minutes, and we delete it within the next hour. Your account is made when you use the link, so asking for one doesn’t make an account.
Your account is shared with the other sites AZ LLC runs, so being signed in on one of them signs you in here too.
What we count
We count how many people read each day, and which pages, ideas and books they read. To tell one reader from another without a cookie, our server mixes your IP address and your browser’s user agent with a random value that changes every day, and keeps the result, not the address. During that day, someone with access to our database could check the result against an address they already have, so we keep it only for the day, Pacific time. Soon after the day ends it keeps just the totals, like how many people read a book that day, and deletes the results and that day’s random value, so one day’s visit can’t be linked to another’s. A backup of our database made during a day keeps that day’s results and random value for as long as the backup is kept.
When you save or share an idea, the page tells our server which idea it was, and we add one to that idea’s total for the day. Nothing about you is kept with it.
Saved ideas and your streak
Until you sign in, the ideas you save and the days you’ve opened today’s idea are kept only in your browser’s local storage on this device. When you open your saved ideas, the page asks our server for those ideas by their IDs, and that request is logged like any other. Clearing your browser’s site data removes what’s on your device.
Screen mode keeps your choices, the topics and how long each idea stays, in local storage on this device too, signed in or not.
When you sign in, the ideas saved on this device are added to your account’s saved ideas, and your streak is kept with your account: the last day you opened today’s idea, and how many days in a row. While you’re signed in, what you save is kept with your account, and this device keeps a copy. Once you’re signed out, the next page you open here removes that copy.
The Sunday email
The Sunday email goes out only if you ask for it, by ticking its box on your account page or on your saved ideas page. When you tick it, we keep the time and the exact words beside the box, so we can show what you agreed to. Tick it again later and that tick’s time and words replace the earlier ones. Untick it and it stops at once, and we keep the time you unticked it. We keep these records for as long as your account exists.
Each Sunday, from 8 in the morning Pacific time, the Sunday email brings one idea, links to that week’s ideas, a question to think about and a link to stories for children. It comes from [email protected], and Resend delivers it. We don’t track whether you open it or which links you follow. For each issue we send you, we keep when it went and Resend’s ID for that email, so nobody gets an issue twice. Deleting your account deletes those records.
To stop it, untick the box, or use the link at the bottom of any issue. That link works without signing in.
Cookies
When you sign in, the site sets one cookie, auth_token, which keeps you signed in for 7 days or until you sign out. It says which account you’re signed in as, and nothing about what you read. We set no other cookies.
Who processes requests for us
- Railway hosts the server.
- Cloudflare carries traffic to it, and on the sign-in page checks that a person is filling in the form.
- Resend sends the sign-in email and the Sunday email, and receives the mail you send us.
- Sentry receives a report when a page fails, and details of a sample of other requests. Both can include your IP address, your browser’s user agent and the page you asked for.
Asking for deletion
Write to [email protected] and we’ll delete what we hold about you. To delete your account, write from the address you sign in with, so we know it’s yours.
